Note: Import only accepts fuel records, not service records.

The import functionality is primarily intended for new users who have a lot of historical data they'd like to keep on their iPhone or iPod Touch. If you only have a handful of records - perhaps less than 25 - it may make sense to manually enter them.

However, if you've imported before and understand the process and you just bought a new vehicle and were supplied with the historical fuel records, you could easily format the data properly in a spreadsheet and have it imported to your phone in less than 10 minutes. You're limited to only the basic fields listed further down, so you may find there's other data you'll have to add later by editing each imported record.

Basic instructions:

1. Set up an App Cubby Online Sync account in Gas Cubby.

2. In Gas Cubby, create the vehicles for which you want to import data. The vehicle name is the only important field but it must be exactly the same in the import file.

3. Tap Sync in Gas Cubby so the vehicles created in step 2 are now in the Online Sync account.

4. Go to: http://appcubby.com/import/request.php, enter your email address used in step 1 and Submit Request.

5. Check your email (and possibly your SPAM folder) for the Import Verification email and follow the link it contains.

6. In the page that appears, click Browse (or Choose File), select the .csv file you prepared and click Import. You'll receive a message confirming successful import or explaining any errors; if there are errors, fix them and try step 6 again.

7. Return to Gas Cubby and tap Sync. While the data should import to your Sync data immediately, it might help to wait a few minutes before tapping Sync.

--------------------------------------------
.csv file - see attached for known good sample.

If your data is formatted properly and contains no errors, it will be imported immediately. If there are any errors, the import process will be halted and a list of errors will be generated. If there are any errors none of the data is imported. Try fixing your .csv file and try again. You may try as many times as you like to import the file.

The input file must contain one or more lines of comma delimited values. Each line must contain exactly 5 or 8 columns as defined below:

1. Date/Time - most English date formats are recognized.
2. Vehicle Name - must match a vehicle name in Gas Cubby
3. Odometer - must be numeric (no commas).
4. Fuel Volume - must be numeric
5. FilledUp - must be 0 for Partial, 1 for Full, or 2 for Reset
------ Optional section: 6-8 must be included or excluded as a group--
6. Cost per Unit Volume - Must be numeric (can't contain a dollar sign or other monetary symbol)
7. Total Cost - Must be numeric (can't contain a dollar sign or other monetary symbol)
8. Octane - Must be numeric (can't be "90+" or "Diesel")
------ Optional section-----------------------------------------

Frequent problems:

1. Due to the way Gas Cubby sync is currently structured, it takes a long time for data to be pulled from our database and processed on the device. This is something we're working on, but for now, please be patient when you first try to sync a bunch of data down from our server. If you have over 100 records it could take several minutes. If you have over 300 records, it could take significantly longer.

2. In some cases the import process shows to be complete on the server, but no data is downloaded to your device. If this happens, DON'T KEEP IMPORTING OVER AND OVER AGAIN. It will keep adding more and more data to your account. If the web import form says "50 lines successfully added to account" the data is definitely on our server and the problem is with Gas Cubby. It doesn't happen very often, so we're still having trouble tracking down the bug. Here are a couple solutions to try:

a) "hard reset" your device: press-hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until the device shuts off and begins to restart, not letting go until you see the silver Apple)

b) this error only seems to occur when there is no data on the device, so if you in fact don't have any data that could be lost, just try reinstalling Gas Cubby. Delete Gas Cubby from your device (WARNING: if there is data in Gas Cubby, you will lose it). Reinstall Gas Cubby from the App Store right on the device (go through the motions as if you are re-purchasing it; as long as you use the same iTunes account, you wont be recharged). Now go back to the sync setup page in Gas Cubby. It should be blank since you just deleted and reinstalled the app. Type in the same email address you used for import and Online Sync initially, then go back to the main screen and tap sync (don't set up a vehicle prior to tapping sync). This should solve any problem associated with import.

3. Each line of data should have EXACTLY 5 or 8, each separated by commas (so 5 values, 4 commas OR 8 values, 7 commas). Because a CSV is by definition separated by commas, you'll need to enclose any data that has commas in parentheses.

4. If you'd like to have Octane values that are alphanumeric (like Diesel or 90+) follow these instructions for a workaround: viewtopic.php?p=2089#p2089

Managing a complex app like Gas Cubby is much more challenging than is obvious on the surface. We've been doing the best we can to obscure that complexity from the user, but import is just one of those things that is hard to make easy. Gas Cubby has several data tables and all sorts of complex calculations and field relationships. We'll keep doing everything we can to make things easier.

If you have any issues with Import or would like to help us clarify the instructions, please post your comments to this thread...

Thanks,

The App Cubby Team

Thanks for the ability to import! I was a little confused at first, but it works fine now.

Just a couple of comments about my experience with import ...
1. It obviously only allows for gasoline.
2. It is not obvious that no header row is allowed in the import csv.
3. When "optional" fields are empty, error messages ensue, so either all 3 must be left off or all three need some type of numeric data. That means if you only have total cost data and want to import it, you apparently need to insert some data, even zeroes in the other 2 optional fields, and it needs to be numeric.
4. Instructions to go to the import web site are a little ambiguous, it is from your computer so you can upload the file to the site ... then sync does the download from the iTouch.

Also, I was a little surprised to see that the calculated mpg is always lagging the date entry to the prior fillup ... i.e. the first entry, when we first bought the car should be 0 for a reset, and then the next fillup would have the mpg calculated for the date the fillup occurred. This also happened during my test of entering a couple of sample fillups before I tried the import.
e.g. the latest fillup has no mpg associated with that record ... just the gal & costs ... the mpg for that tank shows up in the earlier fillup below. Seems confusing that way.

This is really a very useful app and the first that has me moving from my old Excel file!
Thanks!

I was able to successfully import my fill-ups through a .csv file I created from a text file created from AccuFuel.

Here are some questions/concerns:

1) If the vehicle name is two words, it will say that the vehicle name is invalid. I changed my vehicle name from 'Scion tC' to 'tC' and it worked.
2) I noticed that once you sync, it saves all the local data plus all the data from the import file. This is nice.
3) When you try to sync again, it doesn't overwrite files but it actually makes new entries. Kind of a hassle.

I'll try to keep updating here for any concerns/updates I run into.

When I import the same csv file over and over, it adds on to the entries already imported, so it basically duplicates the entries. When I try to delete sync data, it doesn't work, since after I do this, and import another csv file, it adds more entries. So now my 34 entries has grown to 170 duplicated entries.

Fix the delete sync data feature?

HI thanks for a great app. I have followed the instructions for importing but I seem to have issues.

I have created the CSV file uploaded as requested and I get confirmation that all lines are correct.

I then press the sync on the ipone to ensure the data is on the iphone and i get nothing. It looks like its syncing i get no fail messages and no data appears on my device. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. It isn't going unnoticed.

I just tried the delete synced data and re-imported my CSV file and it worked great! Previously, as I said above, the entries would duplicate and also cause erratic date entries. Now it seems like you guys fixed it!

I'm going to try and reimport without deleting and see what happens. I hope that it overwrites everything.

I have not tried the two-words-for-the-vehicle-name problem...but I'm sure you fixed that also! ;)

Thanks!!!!

Howie

I have an account setup with Gas Cubby for syncing but when I enter the email address that I have with my account the import page does not recognize it. Is anyone else having this problem. If it helps, I am a beta user and have version 3 of the beta.

Thanks,

Danny

Are you saying you're using iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 3? In the next few days, we expect to have Apple release our update to Gas Cubby that aims for OS 3.0 compatibility. Ultimately, OS 3.0 is still in beta form and should not be the sole basis for 3.0 compatibility.

I must be missing something obvious.....

I keep getting this error....Line must contain either 5 or 8 columns.

I only have information in 8 columns. There are more columns but they are empty......what am I doing wrong??

Thanks,
Kevin
