Why isn't MPG being calculated?

At least two "full" fuel records for one vehicle must be entered before it's possible to calculate fuel efficiency. At minimum, the first record needs an odometer reading and to be labeled as Full while the second record needs an odometer reading, fuel volume, and to be labeled as Full. This means the last rolling fuel record will never have its fuel efficiency calculated; if you have only entered one record, there is not enough information to make any calculations.

When it's not possible to completely fill the tank to the top, a fuel record should be labeled Partial; this tells Gas Cubby to wait until the next "full" fuel record has been entered to make its calculations. Read more about it in the Calculations section of our manual.

Why are my MPG numbers bizarre?

Closely examine the dates and odometer readings of the records to ensure a record with a later date has a higher odometer reading than a record with an earlier date. Check for errors in fuel volume numbers such as a really low volume amount that may exist because of a misplaced decimal point. Also, consider a fill up may have been skipped.

Why doesn't the Gas Stats chart appear to reflect the data in my records?

Calculating and displaying fuel economy statistics in a meaningful way is more complex than it seems. If you search Gas Cubby for Shell brand gasoline, look at the stats and compare it to stats for Exxon brand gasoline, or compare 87 octane to 91 octane, the results should be meaningful but will never be completely accurate. Unless you run your vehicle until it's completely empty, every tank of gas is a complex combination of different brands of gas and additives. Plus, there are quite a few outside variables that also impact fuel economy: tire size, tire slippage, odometer inaccuracies, weather, etc. We've done our best to calculate the statistics in a way that can help users optimize fuel economy and costs.

When calculating statistics, certain records whose data would negatively effect the accuracy of the calculations are ignored. such as the first record in a set or any Reset records. For this reason, you may see 11 fill ups on the main screen, but only 10 under Total Fill Ups on the stats page.

How do I add another vehicle?

You've probably added one vehicle but haven't seen the "Getting Started" screen for awhile that shows how to add a vehicle. Tap the vehicle selector arrow on the bottom left of the screen until you see "All Vehicles +." Tap anywhere in "All Vehicles +" to begin entering a new vehicle.

How do I export my data?

Tap the magnifying glass in the top left of the main screen to reveal the Search field. Next, tap the Export button, which appears in place of the Add Service and Add Fill Up buttons in the top right. Tap Export to reveal a screen similar to the Mail app. Many of the options in Mail are available, including the option to Save to Drafts. If saved to drafts, you must open Mail to send the message; shortly after saving to drafts, it's possible the message will be saved to your drafts online in your email account if you have an active internet connection.

Export is part of Search mode to allow a natural work flow of filtering data for export. For example, if you wanted to report to your boss all the fill ups you did while driving your car for the company, you could type "business" to search on those fuel records you tagged as "business;" only records containing "business" will remain on the screen and you may now tap Export to send only those.

How do I filter my records so only those from 2010 appear?

Tap the Search button in the top left and then tap More to the right of the text field that appears. In the Advanced Search screen, tap This Year and you'll see Start Date change to Jan 1, 2010 12:00 AM and End Date change to Jan 1, 2011 12:00 AM. Tapping Search in the top left returns to the main screen, revealing only records from 2010.

You may export these records or simply observe the statistics and charts for the viewable data. Do not tap the magnifying glass until you are done viewing the filtered data. The 3 dots over More will be blue when the filters in Advanced Search are active; they are white otherwise.

What are Tags?

Tagging is a tool to classify records so a thread may be made among otherwise unrelated records. For example, a tag "aggressive" may be made and applied to fuel records to indicate aggressive driving during that fuel tank; later, searching for "aggressive" yields only records with that tag. It's possible to apply multiple tags to a single record, such as "business" and "personal" tags along with "aggressive."

Tags appear in exported data so they may also be observed and used for filtering within a spreadsheet program.

Why does a red number badge sometimes appear on the Gas Cubby icon?

That's part of the service reminder functionality to indicate the number of services past due for your vehicles. At some point while using Gas Cubby, you likely received an active alert for the service now being indicated on that badge and you Silenced or Snoozed it. To find which service needs to be performed, view your vehicle detail screen and look for a service listed with red numbers indicating it is overdue; swipe horizontally across the screen to view other vehicles.

Entering a service record for the service in question will remove the badge and end alerts until its time to perform the service again. Badge Notification may be turned off in Advanced Settings.

I set my Oil Change service reminder to 100,000 miles and I just entered a 100,100 mile fuel record. Why didn't I get a reminder?

Service Reminders are based on intervals, not the actual odometer reading. Setting Oil Change to 100,000 miles told Gas Cubby you change your oil every 100,000 miles. Also, the countdown of a service's reminder does not begin until you enter a service record with that service included.

How do I access my Online Sync data?

Currently, it is not possible to access or view this data through a browser; we hope to offer a web app and other online functionality in the future. Online Sync data may only be manipulated with the Sync and Delete Synced Data buttons.

My data disappeared and I've been using Online Sync. How do I recover my Online Sync data?

While the exact way the data disappeared is helpful to know, the following steps should restore your data since the last time the Sync button was tapped.
  1. Hard reset your iPhone by simultaneously pressing the physical Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until the device shuts off and begins to restart on its own. Do not let go of the buttons until the silver Apple appears on the screen.
  2. Open Gas Cubby and find the Setup/Login screen where you set up Online Sync. Ensure your email address is properly entered and tap Send. If you don't receive an alert that your iPhone was already associated with that email address, it's likely the email address entered is incorrect.
  3. Return to the main screen and tap the Sync button.
Every record since the last time Sync was tapped should be restored. Remember, this is not the same as iTunes Sync.

My data was lost and I followed the directions to recover through Online Sync but, when it appeared, the distance, volume and fuel efficiency numbers were all wrong. What happened?

The default unit setting in Gas Cubby is MPG (US), which means it takes miles and US gallons for input and then outputs miles per gallon. You likely have been using Gas Cubby with other units but, when your data was lost, the units were reset to the default MPG (US). Online Sync only stores the numbers, not the units, so the proper numbers were downloaded but you changed the units back to the proper units setting after the data was recovered, doing a unit conversion in the process.

To fix this, do the following:
Note: if you have not tapped Sync since recovering the data and changing the units, you may skip to step 4.
  1. change the units back to MPG (US)
  2. go to the Setup/Login screen and tap Delete Synced Data
  3. return to the main screen and tap Sync
  4. return to the Setup/Login screen and tap Delete Local Data
  5. change the units to what you had been using all along
  6. return to the main screen and tap Sync.
All your data should now be properly restored.

Gas Cubby disappeared when I synchronized in iTunes. How do I get it back?

iTunes can sometimes get confused about the state of your iPhone so, for some reason, it may remove an app entirely. Sometimes apps just get moved so check all screens; it may be easier to use the Search feature and type "gas cubby." It's possible you accidentally confirmed an ambiguous message in iTunes. Also, if you downloaded Gas Cubby directly to your device and never completed a successful sync with iTunes, Gas Cubby was never transferred or backed up.

The next thing to check while your iPhone is connected to your computer is if Gas Cubby is still "checked" in the Applications tab inside iTunes. Click on your iPhone's icon in the left pane of iTunes then click on the Applications tab in the main pane. If the box next to Gas Cubby does not have a check mark in it, click the box to add one and click Apply in the lower right of the iTunes window.

If Gas Cubby still does not appear, run iTunes' "restore from backup" feature. With your iPhone connected and iTunes open, right click on your iPhone's icon and select "restore from backup..." If two backup options are offered, choose the latest backup first; if that doesn't work, try the older one.

While it's unlikely Gas Cubby has not appeared by now, if you still don't see it, you may need to download it again from the App Store. As long as the same account is used to download it as was the first time it was purchased, you will not be charged again no matter how many times you choose to download it, though some alerts you'll receive through the process may appear to indicate otherwise.

Unfortunately, user-entered data often does not restore when the app is reloaded. Downloading the app from the App Store again will likely not restore your data either. This is why we highly recommend using our Online Sync feature, a safety net for data loss.
